Step 1: Verify the Lead "Preferences" Field
Preconditions: your preference data can be managed natively Marketo. For a Personalized Digest to operate, verify that:
Custom field(s) exist in on the person record to track preferred blog Categories and\or Authors.
The values representing preferred Categories and\or Authors in these fields must match your Blog or Newsfeed classification taxonomy (exactly). If your lead has "Tech" in their profile, Digesto will only pull articles tagged "Tech" from your feed for that specific person.
These fields should use "Text Area" type (to allow long values) and have preferences stored with semicolon separated values.
If you don't have a Subscription management program in place yet visit our Preference Managemet Guide or contact us to get help from our Marketo experts.
Step 2 - Create your distribution lists
Digesto requires 2 lists:
One Smart List that you will configure to target all the subscribers of your blog or newsfeed. Ex: "Personalized Digest - All Subscribers"
One Static List (empty) that Digesto will populate with "Qualified" email recipients for each delivery. Ex: "Personalized Digest - Qualified Subscribers"
Build instructions for your Smart List (All Subscribers)
Go to "Database" in your Marketo instance, right-click on "Group Smart Lists"
Create New Smart Lis (Ex: "Personalized Digest - All Subscribers") and configure your smart list filter (Ex: Opt-In = true).
Build instructions for your Static List (Qualified Subscribers - initially empty)
Under "Database" / "Group Lists"
Create New Static List. Ex: Personalized Digest - Qualified Subscribers
Leave it empty (Digesto will automatically populate this list on each scheduled delivery)
⚠︎ Make sure your lists are centralized in the Database section (outside of the Digesto Program).
Step 3 - Create the Marketo Program
Now that you've got your field and two lists in place, you're ready to move to the final step: the Marketo program to send your email updates to your subscribers.
The program must have all the following components:
1 Text format Token for the feed content named: "DGTODynamicContentJSON" (case sensitive)
1 Email script format Token named: "DGTOMain" (case sensitive)
1 Email script format Token named: "DGTOVTL" (case sensitive)
1 Email to send to your subscribers
1 Campaign to send the email
1 Test Campaign to send a test email
3.1 - Create the Program
Create a new folder to host your Digesto program. Ex: "Digesto Blog Updates"
Create a new Standard program.
Additional Tip: Put some relevant information on the description of your program such as: "This program automates blog distribution via Digesto.io. DO NOT SCHEDULE OR ACTIVATE FROM MARKETO. Go to https://digesto.io/login to manage RSS Email."
3.2 - Create 3 Tokens in Your New Program
In your newly-created program, go to "My Tokens" and create the tokens exactly as described below.
Type | Name | Value | Check\Activate Person Token Field(s) |
Text Token | DigestoDynamicContentJSON | Use “-” as a placeholder | #NA |
Email Script Token | DGTOMain | Use “-” as a placeholder | YES! |
Email Script Token | DGTOVTL | Use “-” as a placeholder | #NA |
3.3 Check\Activate Person Token Field(s)
Open the DGTOMain Token created in 3.1 and select the checkbox corresponding to your "Preferences" field(s).
It should look like this when you're done:
3.4 - Create a Blog Email
Create a new local asset.
Select Email OR Email (New) for the new Email Builder.
Browse your Design Studio/My Templates for your preferred template. If you selected a Template from our library look for "Digesto" - "Your Digest Name" template and select it.
3.5 - Insert Personalization Tokens in your email body
Customize your email and Insert the 3 tokens from step 3.2 (see below) in the body section of your email & Approve your email. This is where Digesto will inject new blog content & apply personalization.
"{{my.DGTODynamicContentJSON}} {{my.DGTOMain}} {{my.DGTOVTL}}"
3.6 - Create a Production Campaign and a Test Campaign
Digesto will schedule smart campaigns via the API. One campaign is dedicated to test your Digest (Test), while other will be used for the distribution to your subscribers (Production).
Name | Smartlist | Flow | Schedule |
Set your own name. Ex: "Send TEST Email" | Specify your Test leads/internal | Send Email : Your Digesto Email | Important: Set campaign to run Every Time (to allow multiple tests), |
Set your own name. Ex: "Send PROD Email" | Member if List created in Step 2 "Personalized Digest - Qualified Subscribers" | Send Email : Your Digesto Email | Do not schedule it from Marketo. |
⚠︎ These campaigns should remain as batch campaigns without any schedule - Digesto will schedule the campaign runs, based on the Digesto Schedule.
Optional - if you'd like to track program status automatically in your Marketo program, view this article.
Congrats! you are done! Now back to Digesto, transcribe the Preference Field(s) Names, Program Name, Campaign Name and Test Campaign Name in the dedicated section.
